The year was 1998…

and technological advancements were prolific. The Internet was in its infancy, and people still got a rush of excitement when they heard “You’ve got mail.” We set out to make a difference and to help people learn and develop at work.

It all started with a question: How can we accelerate workplace learning and development for more people in an organization, without astronomical costs? What we created was Open Mentoring, which would one day be known as River.

Addressing challenges

When we first launched our mentoring software, the primary challenges we addressed were:

• making it easier for administrators to run a mentoring program
• helping companies get more people engaged in mentoring
• making it simpler and less time-consuming for administrators (and the mentees and mentors themselves) to make matches between people
• positively impacting people’s development

These resolutions have not changed over the years, but we’ve certainly added to them.
